Pros:  Fuel economy; passenger and cargo space; sporty styling and fun to drive; easy to use controls; price.

Cons:  Driving range suffers from tiny fuel tank; cabin noise, sparse interior.

Overview
The last thing you may picture when it comes to an “affordable subcompact” would most likely be a spacious interior, attractive styling, or a fun-to-drive personality. You may be surprised if I told you that the 2013 Honda Fit offers this clever mix of practicality, frugality and fun without looking overly dorky. And yes, it is virtually impossible to completely erase a subcompacts dorky persona however the Fit’s sculpted profile coupled with playful color schemes gives it a more energetic street appearance than most. It also has a certain zippy quality that makes running errands, well, kind-of fun again.

The Fit offers the utility of a small crossover. Inside you will find ample cargo space thanks to its tall profile and cab-forward styling. This flexible, five person people mover features 20.6 cu. ft. of cargo space with the rear seat in the upright position.  The front passenger seat can even be folded to accommodate items up to almost eight feet long!

Its engine isn’t overly powerful, but you will find that the 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is more than willing to rev at a moment’s notice, is efficient and can be had with the option of either a 5-speed manual or automatic transmission.

Since the Honda Fit got a full redesign for the 2012 model year, it only received minor changes for 2013. Changes consist of a new exterior color, dubbed Midnight Plum Pearl, and the cancellation of the orange burst metallic paint.

This year also sees the addition of the fully electric Fit EV. It is only available for lease if you live near Portland, San Francisco, Sacramento, or Los Angeles but don’t worry because Honda plans to expand its availability into the Northeast sometime this spring. It offers an estimated combined mpg of 82 (adjusted from EPA) and three driving modes-Normal, Sport and Eco. It charges within 12 hours via a standard household outlet or 6 hours if using a 240V outlet. An assortment of web, smartphone and proprietary services also allows customers to monitor its charge status, set charging times to take advantage of optimum utility rates, and locate charging stations.

Body Styles, Trims & Options
The 2012 Honda Fit is offered in two trim levels- base and Sport. The base model comes with basic features such as 15-inch steel wheels, keyless entry, AC, cruise control, cloth upholstery, a 60/40 split folding rear seat, full power accessories, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and a 160-watt, four speaker sound system with a single-disc CD player, auxiliary input jack and an iPod®/USB audio interface.

The Fit Sport adds 16-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, a sporty body kit with a chrome tipped exhaust tip, fog lamps, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls and shift paddles (automatics only), Bluetooth® audio and phone connectivity and a 6-speaker sound system. The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation system is only available on the Fit Sport and features a touchscreen interface and voice activated controls, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® and illuminated steering wheel-mounted audio, cruise, phone and navigation controls.

Provided you live in one of the metro areas discussed above you can opt for the fully electric Fit EV.
