2014 Mazda CX-9

Great Buy

The Mazda CX-9 received a freshening both inside and out for its 2013 model. The only change it sees for 2014 is the addition of rear-cross traffic alert system for its upper trim levels. The CX-9 seats up to seven passengers, two more than its smaller brethren, the CX-5.

The 2014 Mazda CX-9 is offered in three well-equipped trim levels- Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. All three trims are available as two-wheel or all-wheel drive and come standard with a 3.7-liter V6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Two-wheel drive variants return an estimated 17 mpg city and 24 mog highway while all-wheel drive variants drop to 16/22.

Standard features on the entry level Sport includes 18-inch alloy wheels, a rear roof spoiler, tri-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, Bluetooth, and a six-speaker sound system with a 5.8-inch color touchscreen, HD radio, and auxiliary input jacks. Its lone available package includes an 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats and heated mirrors.

Stepping up to the mid-level Touring will add the optional features from the Sport plus auto on/off headlights, leather seating surfaces and a power-adjustable front passenger seat.  Additional standard safety features include a blind-spot monitoring system, rear-cross traffic alert, rear parking sensors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a rearview camera. Options include foglamps, a power moonroof, a power rear liftgate, push-button start, navigation and a Bose surround sound system as part of the Technology Package.

The top-of-the-line Grand Touring gets most of those features as standard. The moonroof, navigation system and Bose Surround sound system are optional as part of the Grand Touring Technology Package. Other options include a rear-seat entertainment system including 11speakers, a DVD player, and a 9-inch display. A Tow Prep Package can also be added (on FWD models only) which includes a heavy-duty transmission oil cooler and radiator fan and a tweaked ECM. This package comes standard on all-wheel drive models.

Prices for the 2014 Mazda CX-9 start at just under $30,000 and top out at $36,000.

Sporty performance, stylish and well-appointed interior, easily accessible third row.

Fuel economy not up to par with its competition, stiff ride when equipped with 20-inch wheels, hefty curb weight.
