Hellcat Vs. Hellcat, Photo By Chris Mitchell Photography

Unprecedented demand for the Dodge Challenger and Charger SRT Hellcat duo means Fiat Chrysler Automobiles [NYSE:FCAU] will need to double the cars’ current rate of production. Unfortunately, the increase in production won’t start until the switchover to 2016 model year examples this September, meaning current tight supplies of 2015 models will remain.

It also means that some existing orders for the 2015 Challenger and Charger SRT Hellcat will be canceled. FCA states it will fulfil currently scheduled orders for 2015 model year cars but customers with unscheduled orders will have to wait for 2016 examples. Those unlucky customers will receive a discount on their cars, though we bet missing out on the first year of production will still be a hard pill to swallow for fans.

And we hear that pricing on 2016 examples will rise; full pricing details should be released in the second week of August when order books open. Official pricing for the 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat started at $59,995, while for the 2015 Charger SRT Hellcat the pricing started at $63,995. Both figures are after you added on destination and gas guzzler charges. Of course, steep premiums were common. FCA is hopeful the increase in production of the 2016 model will help make the buying process fairer.

The 2016 models will receive some upgrades in the form of ultra-premium Laguna Leather interior appointments, Uconnect with navigation, HD radio and five years of SiriusXM Travel Link and SiriusXM Traffic. No changes will be made to the Hellcat engine, though, which means the supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V-8 will still be spitting out a peak 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque.

FCA says that dealer allocation for the cars will continue to be based on past Dodge sales performance. There will be two rounds of allocations, the first this August and a second in February 2016.

“We could not have asked for a more enthusiastic response to the Charger and Challenger SRT Hellcats—it was absolutely unprecedented, but then again, these 707-horsepower muscle cars are unprecedented,” Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis said in a statement. “To meet this demand, we are more than doubling our SRT Hellcat production for 2016 and simplifying the process to make it easier for our enthusiasts to get their hands on the hottest muscle cars in history.”
